According to Moon Phase, Eiichi Ikegami’s novel Shangri La is being developed into an anime. The novel features a Tokyo of the future which has become tropical, thanks to global warming. In order to lessen the ambient temperature of the city center to 5°C (about 41°F), the city is attempting to create the world’s largest urban forest. But the city is overflowing with refugees and an anti-government organization is attempting to stop the forest-building.

The novel was published by Kadokawa and serialized in Newtype magazine, so Japanese anime fans are familiar with the work– and Ikegami is also known for writing the manga Kajimaya with artist Mamoru Kurihara. The Shangri La anime will be produced by Gonzo and feature character designs by none other than Range Murata. Ah! My Goddess: The Movie director Makoto Bessho will helm the project.

The novel was also announced to be mangafied back in March
